Canada Stands for Homes, Not Handcuffs

From coast to coast, Canadians believe that deserves a safe place to call home. But as the cost of housing skyrockets, too many of our neighbours are being forced out of their homes and onto the street. Shelters are full and often unsafe, leaving nowhere else to go.

We all want to solve homelessness. Parks should be for children to play, not where people are forced to live. But instead of giving folks help to get the housing they need, Premier Ford wants to give cities the power to arrest people made to live on the street or force those with addictions into unsuccessful treatment programs. He’s even willing to use the notwithstanding clause to override the constitution and basic human rights to do it.

This approach will not solve homelessness. Homelessness is a housing problem—people living in encampments need a housing solution. You don’t solve the housing crisis long term through arrest and incarceration. You cannot force someone into treatment that doesn’t exist, and even if it did, they would still be homeless when they leave. The only cure for homelessness is a home.

What’s happening in Ontario right now has big implications right across the country. What Premier Ford does in Ontario won’t just affect our neighbours experiencing homelessness in Ontario—it could also set a damaging precedent for the rest of the country. Governments of all levels are watching Ontario right now, and deciding their next moves.

People across Canada—in Ontario and beyond—are all coming together to demand that Premier Doug Ford and Housing Minister Paul Calandra make sure everyone in this province has a safe place to call home. Will you join us?
